The UK’s first Lunar coins
In 2014 The Royal Mint launches the UK’s first Lunar coins with the start of a series to be known as the Shēngxiào Collection. The Lunar Year of the Horse 2014 UK Five-Ounce Silver Proof coin is inspired by centuries of tradition, created by artist Wuon-Gean Ho, a fusion of Chinese and British heritage in a dynamic horse design. With an impressive five full ounces of our finest 999 silver and the perfection of peerless Proof finish this coin is quite remarkable. It will no doubt be popular with collectors and those looking for an auspicious gift alike.
The Lunar coins from The Royal Mint lend a new British angle to an ancient practice. They are an elegant way to wish good fortune and an auspicious year to the recipient, to continue the gifting customs that surround Lunar New Year or to begin an enchanting new collection. The first legal tender Lunar coins struck for the United Kingdom by The Royal Mint begin an auspicious series: The Shēngxiào Collection, honouring the Chinese zodiac and a wealth of tradition.
The Lunar Year of the Horse is the first coin in the Shēngxiào Collection to be released. Wuon-Gean Ho, British Chinese artist and printmaker, has crafted a design that combines a prominent and strong horse in the foreground with the famous Uffington Horse, an ancient white horse carved into the chalk hills of Oxfordshire, at its feet. The design is perfected in silver with the immaculate finish afforded by our Proof quality. With only 1,488 coins available, each with a full five ounces of our finest 999 silver, the Lunar Year of the Horse 2014 UK Five-Ounce Silver Proof coin will be highly sought after.
