Description
This remarkable new series goes back in Australia’s history to discover the larger-than life animals that once roamed, with the first release depicting the Procoptodon.
The Procoptodon is a giant extinct marsupial that was part of a range of megafaunal creatures, which inhabited Australia during the Pleistocene period.
This incredible creature was the largest and most heavily built kangaroo known. It had an unusually short flat face and forwardly directed eyes, long clawed fingers, with a single large toe on each foot. The height of the Procoptodon has been estimated at up to three metres.
The animal is thought to have existed in large numbers, suggesting that it was a very successful species until its decline and eventual extinction.
Struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality, the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965. No more than 6,500 of these 2013 Australian Megafauna – Procoptodon 1oz Silver Proof Coins will be released by The Perth Mint.
FUTURE RELEASES:
