Description

Struck at the Royal British Mint, each coin is struck in .958 fine silver with a total fine silver content of 1 troy oz. The Silver Britannia has a legal tender face value of 2 British pounds. These proof 1 oz Britannia’s were limited to a mintage of only 2,450 coins.

The Latin name Britannia is an ancient term for Roman Britain, a providence of the Roman Empire from 43-409 A.D. It is also a personified female symbol of the island. The Britannia coin was first released in 1997, with a different design minted every year to follow. The 2012 Britannia was the final year the coin was struck in .958 fine silver.

The obverse of this coin features Queen Elizabeth II with “ELIZABETH II” and the abbreviations, “D G REG FID DEF” around her. The latter inscriptions derive from the phrase, “Dei Gratia Regina Fidei Defensor,” meaning Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith. The face value of 2 pounds appears at the bottom edge of the coin.

On the reverse of the coin the Britannia is displayed wearing a flowing dress as she looks off towards the left. She is holding a trident in one hand and a shield with a British flag design in the other. Around her reads “BRITANNIA 2012 ONE OUNCE FINE SILVER.”
