The center of the painting depicts the Madonna with the Christ Child flanked by Saint Barbara and Saint Sixtus standing slightly below her. Two distinctive winged cherubs rest on their elbows at the foot of the picture. The figures of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Saints are positioned on the heavenly clouds, whereas obscure ethereal cherubs hover in the background of the scene. The impression of elusiveness is enhanced by flowing robes of the Madonna. On the other hand, a heavy drapery in the upper part of the painting and the Papal tiara emphasize the monumental character of the chef-d’oeuvre being one of the most distinctive depictions of Virgin Mary and the Holy Infant in the world. For a long time the canvas was housed in the Benedictine Monastery of San Sisto in Piacenza. The masterpiece remained relatively unknown until 1754 when it was purchased by Augustus III of Poland. Soon thereafter it was relocated to Dresden and achieved a new prominence.
