The only official new coin design for Prince George

The first child of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge was greeted with a first from The Royal Mint – a coin struck for a Royal birth. And as Prince George is christened we have another first, as never before has a Royal christening been commemorated on Britain’s coins. A christening design has been commissioned for this official coin – it has been approved by the Palace – and as a sterling Silver Proof £5 coin it is a very special reminder of a very special event.

Very few coins were struck to mark Prince George’s birth, and many were left disappointed when they sold out within days. But the Royal christening is a chance to celebrate the young Prince once more with a brand new design for the £5 – a coin that has played its part in honouring Royal events so often. The design, by artist John Bergdahl, is traditional and beautiful, inspired by the customs surrounding Royal christenings.

Your coin is struck in sterling silver to Royal Mint Proof quality – perfected by our craftspeople to a quality envied around the world. Only 12,500 coins will ever be struck, and with their elegant packaging they are most desirable. Each coin is housed in a case for you to display, and accompanied by a booklet exploring Royal christening traditions and a Certificate of Authenticity.

Marking a Royal christening for the very first time

There was much speculation about the new Prince’s name, with George a popular guess even before the young Prince arrived. The christening of His Royal Highness Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge, as we now know he is named, is cause for celebration indeed. With your Silver Proof £5 coin you will receive a booklet so you can read about the origins of his names, discover more about the Lily Font and other Royal christening traditions, and explore the history that goes before Prince George, a baby who is destined to be king one day.

John Bergdahl has embraced history and tradition to create a reverse design with a very regal feel. The Lily Font appears at the base of his design, lilies and cherubs balancing the simple inscription that marks out this very first christening coin. Only 12,500 official Silver Proof coins will be struck, and with the silver coin issued for Prince George’s birth selling out so quickly, a swift order is highly recommended.
