About the Coin
New Zealand Mint is proud to announce this coin issue celebrating the first man in space as part of the Conquest of Space series. Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin was a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut. He was the first human being to journey into outer space, when his Vostok spacecraft completed a single orbit of the Earth on April 12, 1961.
The rectangular shaped pure .999 pure silver coloured coin is limited to 5,000 sets only.
REVERSE DESIGN
With permission from Alexei Leonov presented on this coin in magnificent colour is a reproduction of his original painting that illustrated this historic achievement. Engraved in 3D relief is the space ship Vostok 1 which Yuri Gagarin used to orbit the earth.
OBVERSE DESIGN
The Raphael Maklouf effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, along with decorative border.
PACKAGING
The coin is presented in a blister pack which also acts as the Certificate of authenticity.
