A silver celebration of the Sapphire Jubilee
The first jubilee celebrated in Her Majesty The Queen’s long reign was her Silver Jubilee, marking 25 years since her accession. The festivities set the tone for the future, with streets, homes and even landmarks like Tower Bridge decked out in red, white and blue – a colour scheme that remains in place for the bridge today as a reminder of the celebrations.
Official United Kingdom coins were issued for the Silver, Golden and Diamond Jubilees, and though the celebrations for the Sapphire Jubilee may be quieter, we are marking 65 years of The Queen’s reign in style – she is the first and only British monarch to reach this landmark anniversary. Gregory Cameron, designer of The Royal Mint’s first Christmas coin, has created a Royal Arms design reserved for the UK’s largest coins, including this 999 fine silver five-ounce coin, which is limited to just 1,500 editions. The booklet that accompanies the coin contains reflections from former BBC Royal Correspondent Jennie Bond, on some of the characteristics that have made Queen Elizabeth II such a popular monarch.
