A tribute to a man larger than life
A half-century after the death of Winston Churchill we pay tribute with a first, to honour a man who holds an unrivalled place in history – he is the only statesman to be honoured twice on Britain’s coins. The flinty gaze, the lips that spoke such stirring words are unmistakable. The unusual facing portrait fills just part of this £5 coin to reflect the true stature of this man – this artist, politician, soldier, father, mentor, writer, husband, this great citizen of the world.
About The Coin
There is perhaps no better way to describe Sir Winston Churchill than ‘larger than life’. This was a man who embodied so much, famed the world over as a statesman and leader, iconic in stature, instantly recognised. His life’s work was recognised with the Nobel Prize in Literature, he was made the first honorary citizen of the United States by Act of Congress and was awarded the honour of a State funeral. The world paused in 1965 as a great man was laid to rest. And The Royal Mint struck a coin in his honour.
In 2015 we strike a second coin, 50 years after his death. He is the first statesman in history to be afforded such a tribute. And what a tribute it is, every bit as moving as that first commemorative coin. Sculptor Mark Richards FRBS has exceeded the field of the coin with his portrait – for the artist, it is impossible to capture everything of this multi-faceted man in one design. Your coin is struck in 925 sterling silver, with only 7,500 available, presented with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity and a booklet that explores the story of a remarkable man.
